My father's father (Milton Boone Mark) in the late 1870's or early 1880's.

My grandfather lost his father in the Civil War (see the next story down on the Genealogy page). Milton managed to survive, however, and even prosper. He married at 21, and he and my grandmother had a large number of children, several of whom died in childhood.

And then at age 46, with several small children, he died. So my father was also raised fatherless, as his father had been.

The family story says my grandfather was very well off, but when he died the money was all lost. I don't know if that was true or not. I know he did own the Morehead Grocery, which is still there as of 1998.
