Old St. Peter's Landmark
Old St. Peter's Landmark was built as a Catholic church in 1898, and served that parish until about 1970, when it was scheduled for demolition. A group of citizens of The Dalles purchased it for a landmark. The interior is strikingly beautiful as you enter, with the vault and altar catching your eye. The railing and altars, made in Italy from Carrara marble, were intalled by Italian artisans. Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus. Madonna is the representation of the Virgin in art. This statue was carved from the keel of a sailing ship that sank off the coast of San Francisco in the mid 1925s, in thanks of a family member surviving the shipwreck. Saint Rita of Cascia, one of the most popular saints, is known as the "Saint of the Impossible," because of her alleged amazing answers to prayers. She died in the Augustinian Convent in Cascia, on May 22, 1457, at the age of 76. People flocked to the convent to pay their last respects. Innumerable miracles were said to have taken place through her intercession, and devotion to her spread far and wide. The cherubs portray the daughters of one of the Povey brothers.
