Stonehenge

You didn't expect to find Stonehenge here, did you. I bet you thought it was in England.

Sam Hill, of railroad fame, had this Stonehenge built around 1920. It is constructed of concrete, but other than that is a pretty faithful replica of the real thing as it was when it was new, a few thousand years ago. The views here are to the west, from the extreme east end of the Columbia Gorge, on the Washington side. The mountain you can almost see through the window is Mt. Hood.

Looking west toward the Gorge, from Stonehenge

As you can see, this is dry country. Go a just few miles west, and you come to what people generally think of as the Pacific Northwest, wet and green.

The mountain you can see is Mt. Hood.

Heelstone

This view, a different day and different time of day,
looks east, with the heelstone through the window.
