On the elevator to the top, I talked to the most pitiful person I have ever met. She was a teacher, an American, who had saved her money for years because she wanted to visit Paris. When she got there, she found she was terrified of going out by herself. She had spent her whole vacation in her room, afraid to venture out. Finally, on the day she was to leave for home, she got up enough nerve to go to the Eiffel Tower. Now that is a sad story. But true.
