Presidents' Places: Grover Cleveland
Westland, Stephen Grover Cleveland's home, is located in beautiful Princeton, New Jersey. He lived here from the time he retired from the presidency until he died. The home is now in private hands, and was being renovated when I stopped by, so Grover wasn't there, of course.
Grover Cleveland was the only Democrat elected president between James Buchanan and Woodrow Wilson. a period of over 50 years. He was elected two separate times, with Benjamin Harrison serving a term in between Cleveland's two. Grover was the only president other than Franklin D. Roosevelt to win the popular vote three times. But alas, Harrison beat him out on the electoral vote the second time. Cleveland was not one of the "great" presidents; he tried for little and accomplished even less.
While in the White House, "Big Steve" married his 21-year-old ward, Francis Fulsom, which sounds pretty suspicious to me (he was 49). They apparently had a pretty good marriage, though, despite the age difference. They had a bunch of kids.
